Welcome to Verenigde Cultuur Maatschappijen (N.V. VCM) at Rust en Werk.<\/h2>\n

VCM Plantations consists of Plantage Rust en Werk together with the adjacent plantations Lust tot Rust and Einde Rust, which were founded around 1750 by Governor Wigbold Crommelin, who was the Governor General in the colony of Suriname at the time. Originally, cotton and sugarcane were grown on these plantations along with several other crops. The largest sugar factory in South America was located on Rust en Werk. Over the centuries from the time of Crommelin, the plantation was sold and transferred to various owners, and in 1947, there was a turnaround with the establishment of N.V. Verenigde Cultural Company N.V. and expansion of business with more plantations than just Rust en Werk. N.V. VCM was purchased in 1979 by the current owner, Mr. Armand van Alen, and has since become a thriving livestock farm. In recent years, the company has expanded and now covers 11 surrounding plantations with a 12th plantation Nut en Schadelijk, better known as Herendijk, further upstream. Since 1987, a fish and shrimp company called Comfish has been established on the Einde Rust plantation.<\/p>\n

VCM Plantations encompasses more than just crops and livestock; there is a rich history hidden here with many still present remains. Visitors to the plantation are invited to take a walk through history and envision the plantations and their inhabitants. Compare the past with the present and experience the unique setting. Explore our flora and fauna in this 5600 ha. large area and simply enjoy life in the beautiful green landscape. The VCM plantations have so much to offer, from learning about the strategies in our livestock and agriculture to experiencing nature.
